Questions, myths, and further reading

Clear language beats mystique — and good sources outlive trends.

Common misconceptions

  • Chakras are not literal spinning disks you must “align” with merchandise.
  • Feeling nothing during meditation does not mean you are broken.
  • Intense kundalini-style experiences are not required for meaningful practice.
  • Color charts from the 1970s are pedagogical, not archaeological.
  • No single mantra instantaneously cures illness or trauma.

Other traditions

Tibetan subtle body, Chinese qigong, Sufi centers, and Christian contemplative prayer each offer maps of interior life. Reading across traditions can deepen respect without flattening differences.

Recommended sources

  • Pūrṇānanda, Sat-cakra-nirūpana — consult scholarly translations with commentary.
  • Classic hatha texts such as the Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā and Śiva Saṃhitā.
  • Modern scholars of yoga history for context on Western adaptations.
  • A qualified teacher in the lineage you practice — always primary for mantra and breath.
